England midfielder Conor Gallagher has sealed a dramatic return to the Premier League, completing a £34 million move to Tottenham Hotspur from Atletico Madrid. The 25-year-old has openly admitted he turned down the chance to join Champions League-chasing Aston Villa because his heart was set on a move to North London.
A London Homecoming for the Former Chelsea Youth
Gallagher's transfer marks a significant homecoming for a player who first made his name in the capital. Having risen through the academy ranks at Chelsea, he departed for Spanish football in 2024, where he spent a season and a half under the tutelage of Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid. He made 77 appearances for the La Liga side, scoring seven goals, before the lure of a Premier League return proved irresistible this January.
"I Wanted to Be a Spurs Player" - Gallagher's Verdict
In his first interview as a Tottenham player, Gallagher left no doubt about his motivations for the switch. He confirmed that he had the option to join an Aston Villa side sitting third in the table but opted for a project under head coach Thomas Frank at Spurs instead.
"I'm so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club," Gallagher told the official Tottenham website. "I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same." He added: "It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I'm ready to get on the pitch. I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here."
Frank Hails Midfielder's Leadership and Power
Spurs boss Thomas Frank expressed his delight at securing the signature of a player he believes will significantly bolster his midfield options. He praised Gallagher's blend of youth, vast experience, and tangible on-pitch qualities.
"Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad," Frank stated. "He is still young, so has plenty of room for improvement, but also has huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team."
The Danish coach highlighted the intangibles Gallagher will bring, noting: "Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch."
The move, completed swiftly after the January transfer window opened, represents a major coup for Tottenham as they look to climb the table. For Aston Villa, it is a notable setback in their recruitment plans, missing out on a key target to a direct rival.
