Dutch forward Donyell Malen has publicly addressed his departure from Aston Villa, confirming his recent switch to Italian giants AS Roma was driven by a specific tactical desire.
Seeking a central role prompts transfer
Malen, who joined Villa just last year, has moved to Roma on a loan deal which includes an obligation for the Serie A club to make the transfer permanent. The 27-year-old revealed his primary motivation was to secure regular playing time in his favoured position as a central striker, rather than being deployed in a wider attacking role.
At Villa Park, manager Unai Emery's system is built around the prolific Ollie Watkins, leaving limited opportunities for Malen to lead the line consistently. While Emery is understood to rate the player's talent highly – hence his signing in 2025 – Malen grew frustrated with his supporting role on the flank.

In his first interview as a Roma player, Malen confirmed that assurances over his positional future were key to the move. "I prefer to play in the centre," Malen stated. "I think I can be more dangerous as a pure striker, create chances for the team, and score goals. So I like that position."
