Aston Villa defender Matty Cash has firmly rejected any notion of using tired legs as an excuse, despite the club facing a congested fixture schedule during the crucial final stretch of the season. The comments come in the wake of Villa's 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, a result that leaves the team fighting hard for a coveted top-four position in the Premier League.
Evenly Matched Encounter at the City Ground
The match saw an early breakthrough when Forest's Murillo scored an unfortunate own goal in the 23rd minute, handing Villa the lead. However, the advantage was short-lived as Neco Williams equalised for the hosts shortly after. Villa had opportunities to reclaim the lead, with Morgan Rogers hitting the crossbar just before Forest's goal, and Ollie Watkins missing a chance in the 79th minute after being set up by Emi Buendia.
Speaking to the club's official media channels, Cash reflected on the game, acknowledging its balanced nature. "I think they had a few chances as well. Overall, a little bit of an even game," he stated. "In the first half, we probably had more chances, I think we dominated a little bit more, and then as soon as they got the goal, it was a little bit of a turnover. But they're fighting for their lives, we're fighting to get in the top four – I'd say a fairly even game."
No Room for Excuses in High-Stakes Run-In
Cash emphasised the team's determination to push through fatigue, highlighting the importance of their objectives. "This part of the season, when you're fighting for such a big achievement, we've got such important games, you haven't got time to think and to have excuses for feeling leggy," he explained. "Obviously, we're human, we're going to be tired, but we've got such a big goal to achieve, so we're trying to not let that get in the way."
He also pointed out the competitive landscape, with other top clubs vying for similar goals. "We've got a lot of teams around that are in good form, fantastic players, big budgets, so it's going to be a fight right until the end," Cash added. "You've got the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United all fighting for it, so we're going to obviously stay focused, go right to the wire, keep picking up as many points as we can, and see where it leaves us."
Despite the disappointment of dropping points, Cash reassured fans that the squad remains fully committed. "Obviously, disappointed, because every game we play, we want to win it, especially at the crucial end part of the season, but we move on from it," he concluded, underscoring the team's resilience as they navigate a demanding schedule in pursuit of Premier League success.
