Napoli Target Wolves Midfielder Joao Gomes

Wolverhampton Wanderers face a battle to keep hold of key midfielder Joao Gomes, with Italian giants Napoli reportedly making the Brazilian a 'major target' for a summer transfer.

The 24-year-old's impressive performances at Molineux have attracted significant attention. According to reports from CaughtOffside, Napoli are leading the chase for his signature. However, they are not alone, with La Liga side Atletico Madrid and Premier League clubs Manchester United and Crystal Palace also credited with a strong interest.

It is suggested that Liverpool, previously linked with the player, have now cooled their pursuit. Gomes signed a long-term contract with Wolves running until June 2030, putting the club in a strong negotiating position. Despite this, a summer departure is considered likely, especially if Wolves' fight against relegation is unsuccessful.

Gomes's Career Path and Current Role

Joao Gomes, a full Brazilian international with 10 caps, began his career at Flamengo. He progressed through their academy and made 122 first-team appearances, scoring four goals, before his move to England.

Since joining Wolves, he has become a crucial figure in midfield, providing competition and depth for head coach Rob Edwards. To date, he has made 112 appearances for the club, finding the net on seven occasions.

Edwards Addresses Transfer Speculation

With the January transfer window closing on Monday 2nd February, Wolves boss Rob Edwards has spoken openly about the possibility of departures. The club, currently in the Premier League relegation zone alongside Burnley and West Ham, will consider any significant offers.

"I'm not saying that no one's going to go, I've been consistent with that all the way through," Edwards stated. "But, it's not like people are banging the door down or trying to force anything."

He emphasised that the squad remains committed but confirmed the club would assess any bids. "We'll treat everything on an individual basis. If we think it's the right thing for the club, then we might look at something, but only if it's right for us."

Striker Jorgen Strand Larsen has also been linked with a potential exit this month. Edwards' side, who recently faced Newcastle United, prepare for a tough trip to Manchester City this Saturday as their battle for survival continues.
