Former West Bromwich Albion manager Ryan Mason has opened up about his close friendship with England captain Harry Kane, revealing the private message he shared with the striker before his World Cup heroics against Mexico.
Mason's bond with Kane
Mason, who briefly managed West Brom in 2021, has known Kane since their time together at Tottenham Hotspur's academy. The pair developed a strong bond that has lasted through the years, with Mason often offering advice to the England skipper.
Speaking in a recent interview, Mason disclosed that before England's crucial World Cup match against Mexico, he sent Kane a message of encouragement. "I just told him to go out there and be himself," Mason said. "He's the best in the world, and I knew he would deliver."
Kane's World Cup heroics
Kane responded with a stellar performance, scoring twice to lead England to a 2-1 victory over Mexico. The goals were pivotal in securing England's progression to the knockout stages of the tournament.
According to Mason, Kane's mental strength and leadership are key reasons for his success. "He's always had that drive, even as a kid. Nothing has changed," Mason added.
Mason's managerial career
Mason's own career took a different path after a serious head injury forced him to retire as a player. He transitioned into coaching and later managed West Brom, though his tenure was short-lived. He has since worked as a coach at Tottenham and remains highly regarded in football circles.
The revelation of his message to Kane offers a rare glimpse into the personal connections that fuel top-level football. Mason's insight into Kane's mindset underscores the importance of support networks in high-pressure environments.
