Wrexham's £6.5m Midfielder Ben Sheaf Could Return for Birmingham City Showdown
Wrexham may receive a significant boost ahead of their crucial Championship encounter with Birmingham City this Sunday, with midfielder Ben Sheaf potentially returning from a knee injury. The 28-year-old, who joined the Red Dragons from Coventry City last summer for a fee of £6.5 million, has been sidelined since February's 5-3 victory over Ipswich Town.
Injury Recovery and Training Assessment
Initially, there were fears that Sheaf's season might be over due to the knee issue, but the player has made encouraging progress in his rehabilitation. He was assessed during a training game on Wednesday, as part of Wrexham's preparations for the weekend fixture. Manager Phil Parkinson provided an update following his team's 5-1 defeat to Southampton on Tuesday.
Parkinson stated: "We'll look at Sheafy tomorrow (Wednesday) because we're going to come in and have a practice game for all the lads who need some football because the game's not until Sunday. It's never great coming in when you've got beat, but it's a scheduled day's training and we need to be in together as a group and reflect on this game, and be ready to respond. Sheafy will train tomorrow (Wednesday) and we'll assess him before the weekend."
Sheaf's Season and Wrexham's Midfield Options
Before his injury, Ben Sheaf was a key figure for Wrexham, starting 24 Championship matches this season. His absence has seen manager Phil Parkinson rely on the midfield pairing of George Dobson and Lewis O'Brien, who are likely to retain their places in the starting lineup for Sunday's game at St Andrew's, regardless of Sheaf's availability.
Historical Context and Stakes of the Match
This fixture, often dubbed the 'Hollywood Derby', has a recent history that adds intrigue to the upcoming clash. Birmingham City defeated Wrexham 3-1 in last season's encounter at St Andrew's, a victory that contributed to Blues' successful League One title campaign. The two meetings at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground have both ended in 1-1 draws.
For Wrexham, the stakes are particularly high this Sunday. After dropping out of the Championship's top-six positions, the team urgently needs a victory to maintain their connection with the playoff spots. The potential return of Ben Sheaf could provide a timely lift as they aim to secure a crucial win against Birmingham City.
