Tavernier tipped for Championship impact amid Wolves Spurs links

James Tavernier would suit Championship football and could make a real impact in the division, according to a former chief executive who now runs a football consultancy. The Rangers captain has been linked with moves to Wolves and Tottenham.

Tavernier, 34, is set to end an eleven-year association with the Ibrox club, sparking a link to Wolves. Earlier this week, it was reported that Wolves have highlighted Tavernier as a potential option for their summer recruitment, but there is no solid indication that they will make a move for him. Spurs have been linked with other reports tipping Tavernier for possible interest from Saudi Arabia.

Wyness backs Tavernier for Championship success

Speaking to the Inside Track podcast, former Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness discussed Tavernier and his future. He explained how he is surprised Tavernier has not made the move to the Championship in the past and believes he still has the quality to make an impact at that level.

He said: "There's talk about is it Spurs, or is it Wolves? They're talking about having him come down because he is the type of player that, if Spurs are relegated, you would need and want in the Championship. This is exactly what I mean about putting together a squad to be in the Championship, and Tavernier can play a very good role for a season or two in a club that's challenging in the Championship. That's where I would place him, and he could still have a very good payday and a good contract."

Wyness added: "I'm surprised he hasn't gone before because I rate him, and he's a character and a good personality. That's where I expect him to turn up. I was not surprised to see Spurs thinking about him, if they went down, because he's exactly the type of player that could be there. So we'll see where he goes.

"What's amazed me is he hasn't left before, because Tavernier is a talented player, and I'm amazed he hasn't made it down into the lower levels of the Premier League and the Championship as well. I think he can still do a great job. So we'll see where he goes. Eleven years for Rangers, great service. So they should be very thankful. And even at 34, he's still fit enough to do a job. So good luck to him."
