Wolves reject fan calls to bring back Liquidator song

Wolves have confirmed they will not bring back the Liquidator at Molineux, citing concerns over ‘offensive chanting’ linked to the reggae instrumental track. The song was last played at the stadium more than two decades ago, and when it was used, it led fans to chant against rivals Albion, including expletives.

Fan campaign for the Liquidator's return

In recent years, Wolves supporters have been calling for the song to return, and the desire increased after the club’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed. The topic was discussed at this week’s Fan Advisory Board meeting, where supporters specifically requested the song be brought back. They argued that the track ‘would help generate atmosphere and reconnect with a part of the club’s past’.

Club's stance on offensive chanting

However, the club expressed concerns that the song would ‘place it in direct conflict with ground regulations relating to abusive language, the club’s acceptable behaviour policy, wider equality, diversity and inclusion commitments and ongoing work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all supporters’. As a result, the club confirmed it would not reintroduce the Liquidator.

Minutes from the Fan Advisory Board meeting

The minutes of the meeting stated: ‘It was explained that since the track was last used more than two decades ago, there has been a significant shift in expectations around supporter behaviour, safety and inclusivity. As part of this, the club now operates under a risk-based safety certificate and detailed operational policies, which place a clear responsibility on the club to anticipate and mitigate behaviour that could lead to regulatory or disciplinary issues.’

‘It was made clear that there is a consistent expectation from football governing bodies, that clubs take proactive steps to prevent foreseeable incidents, rather than responding after the event. The operational challenges were also highlighted, including the difficulty of enforcing behaviour standards if the club is seen to be facilitating a situation where those standards are likely to be breached.’

‘In addition, potential reputational risks were discussed, including the impact on the club’s public image, relationships with partners, broadcasters and sponsors, and the likelihood of complaints from some supporters.’

The Liquidator remains in use at other clubs such as Albion, Chelsea, Yeovil Town and Northampton Town, but Wolves have decided against its return.
