Wrexham hire ex-Birmingham City CFO 'Dr Doom'

Wrexham have appointed former Birmingham City chief financial officer Mark Smith, who was famously dubbed 'Dr Doom' by Blues chairman Tom Wagner, to a new role with the Championship club.

Smith's Move to Wrexham

Smith officially departed St Andrew's last month, and Birmingham City have since hired Andrew Rudd, formerly commercial finance director at Manchester United, as his replacement. Smith had been with Blues for six-and-a-half years, initially joining in 2019 as financial controller before being promoted to chief financial officer in June 2021.

Key Role at Birmingham City

The Brummie played a pivotal role following Knighthead's takeover, advising on transfer spending limits. Chairman Tom Wagner jokingly referred to him as 'Dr Doom' last year for his conservative financial approach, which ensured the club complied with EFL regulations. Wagner explained at an Open House event: 'There's a member of staff, our CFO, and his name is Dr Doom. He takes a very conservative approach with regard to our forward financials. We spent what we could, we have a very high quality squad, and I'm very comfortable with the process of recruitment.'

Wrexham's Ambitions

Smith will now oversee Wrexham's finances as the club, which finished runners-up to Blues in League One last season, adapts to Championship life. Wrexham are in contention for a play-off spot, battling Hull City and Derby County for sixth place on the final day of the season.
