Cardiff 5K Road Race Series Returns for 27th Year Supporting Armed Forces Charity

The Cardiff 5K Road Race Series is set to make a triumphant return this summer, marking its 27th consecutive year of operation. This established three-race event invites runners from across the nation to participate while raising crucial funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. The series specifically benefits the SSAFA South East Wales branch, combining competitive athletics with meaningful community support.

A Respected Fixture in the Summer Running Calendar

Held under the strict rules of UK and Welsh Athletics, the Cardiff 5K series has earned a respected place on the Cardiff athletics calendar. Each race is limited to 400 participants, with entries allocated strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. The competitive standard is highlighted by impressive course records: 14:24 for men and 15:29 for women, showcasing the high level of performance regularly seen at these events.

Founding and Continued Mission

The series was originally founded in 1998 by Graham Finlayson BEM, following his 28 years of service with the 2nd (V) Battalion the Royal Regiment of Wales. His vision continues today, as the event seamlessly blends competitive racing with fundraising for the Armed Forces community. Michael Wheeler, chair of the SSAFA South East Wales branch, emphasized the series' dual appeal.

"The Cardiff 5K Series has built a strong reputation over many years," Wheeler stated. "We see competitive club runners chasing personal bests alongside others taking part for the first time. Every entry supports SSAFA South East Wales and the work we do locally for serving personnel, veterans, and their families. We encourage runners of all abilities to sign up and be part of this year's series."

2026 Race Details and Schedule

The 2026 race dates have been confirmed as follows:

Supporting the Armed Forces Community

Funds raised through the series will directly support SSAFA South East Wales in providing practical, financial, and emotional assistance to members of the Armed Forces community during times of need. SSAFA has been dedicated to helping regulars and reserves, whether serving or retired, along with their families, since its establishment in 1885.
