Steven Gerrard Reflects on Aston Villa Sacking and Rangers Regret
Former Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has candidly discussed the profound impact of his sacking from the club and expressed regret over his decision to leave Rangers for the Premier League opportunity. In a revealing interview on The Overlap podcast, Gerrard opened up about the emotional challenges he faced after his departure from Villa Park.
The Move from Rangers to Aston Villa
Gerrard made the switch from Rangers to Aston Villa in November 2021, following a successful stint in Scotland where he led Rangers to the SPL title. However, his time at Villa proved difficult, with the manager winning only 13 of his 40 games across all competitions. Reflecting on the transition, Gerrard admitted that the jump in level was more significant than he had anticipated.
"The level was a big jump. Probably didn't realise at the time when I made that decision," Gerrard said. "In hindsight again, we talk about hindsight, we'd all be great with hindsight, wouldn't we? Would have stayed at Rangers longer, more experience, stay up there for longer."
Regrets and Recruitment Issues
Gerrard explained that conversations with Rangers after winning the title, particularly regarding recruitment and finances, left him feeling uncertain about the club's readiness to build on their success. "It was a bit more of a like, 'oh, let's settle this and fix that and do that.' The promises weren’t as strong as I thought they would be," he noted. Despite this, he acknowledged the allure of the Premier League offer, stating, "Then the Premier League offer and opportunity comes in, it's tough. It's tough to say no to that."
He was quick to clarify that he holds no ill will towards Aston Villa, praising the club's people and facilities. "I’ve got nothing bad to say about Villa. I need to get that in as well. Villa are a really good club, good people, fantastic facilities. The opportunity was given to me, and it didn’t work out, so that’s on me," Gerrard added.
Emotional Impact of the Sacking
The sacking had a deep emotional effect on Gerrard, leaving him feeling "useless" and struggling with mixed emotions in the aftermath. "I had a period after Villa when my head was done in for months. I understood it. If you have a run of form like we did, the responsibility was mine and I accepted it," he revealed.
Gerrard described feeling gutted about missing the opportunity to build on what he saw as a half-decent start. "I was sitting around gutted because I felt like there was a big opportunity going into the first full season to build on a half-decent start. That was a tough one for me," he said. "I had mixed emotions. I was feeling sorry for myself. Felt a bit bitter. Felt a bit useless. You go through these emotions, but come round to understanding that it’s part of it."
Villa's Revival Under Unai Emery
While Gerrard's departure was tough for him personally, it sparked a remarkable revival for Aston Villa. Under the leadership of Unai Emery, the club transformed from strugglers to European contenders within months. Villa went on to qualify for the Champions League and remain in the mix for elite European competition this season, highlighting the club's successful turnaround post-Gerrard.
Since his sacking, Gerrard has managed in Saudi Arabia but has yet to make a return to the dugout. His reflections offer a rare glimpse into the personal toll of football management and the difficult decisions that shape careers in the sport.
