Angel Gomes Opens Up About Rob Edwards' Influence and Wolves Move
When Wolverhampton Wanderers secured the loan signing of Angel Gomes from Marseille in the January transfer window, it sparked considerable surprise among football observers. The former Manchester United midfielder, once part of the England senior squad and widely expected to make a mark in the Premier League, had been plying his trade in France before his winter return to English football.
A Straight Loan Deal with Uncertain Future
Gomes joined Wolves on a straightforward loan arrangement until the end of the season, with no obligation for a permanent purchase included in the terms. Since his arrival, he has featured in a limited number of appearances for the club. The possibility of him making a long-term stay at Molineux remains unclear, as no decisions have been announced regarding a potential summer move.
Gomes Reflects on Return to England and Edwards' Role
In a recent interview with the Wolves official website, Gomes shared insights into his transition and the past few months at the club. He emphasized that returning to England was always part of his career plan, though the timing surprised some. "I never ruled out coming back to England," Gomes stated. "A lot of people thought maybe I'd come back sooner, but it was about what made sense for me. At this point, it was a good window, a good opportunity to come back and to play in the Premier League."
Gomes also highlighted the significant impact of Wolves coach Rob Edwards, with whom he had previously worked during Edwards' tenure in the England youth setup. "Rob’s been great for me," Gomes remarked. "I've seen the transition he's also gone through, from being together in the 20s. He’s obviously the same guy and has a real drive and ambition, and he wants to see the club really succeed. Since I've been in, it's been really refreshing."
Positive Experience at Wolves Despite Challenges
Despite acknowledging the difficulties faced by the club this season, Gomes expressed enthusiasm about his time at Wolves so far. He praised the welcoming environment and detailed preparation he has encountered. "I've loved the experience so far being here, everyone's made me feel really settled and, for me, that was important," he said. "The attention to detail since I've been back has been really good. I obviously know that the situation for the club has been difficult for the players, but the vibe and the camp has been great. It's been really positive so far."
Gomes did not disclose any specifics about his future plans, focusing instead on his current contributions and the supportive atmosphere at Wolves. His comments underscore a player who is embracing his opportunity in the Premier League while benefiting from familiar coaching guidance.
