Joe Hayden's Knockout Victory Leads Doncaster's Boxing Triumph
In a spectacular display of skill and power, Conisbrough boxer Joe Hayden delivered a decisive knockout against previously undefeated Welsh opponent James Atkins. The electrifying moment thrilled a packed and partisan crowd at the Doncaster Dome, marking a night of triumph for five Doncaster boxers who all secured victories on a show themed as 'The Rise of Doncaster'.
Undefeated Joe Hayden, pictured above, claimed two Commonwealth welterweight title belts with this impressive win. Hayden expressed surprise at the early stoppage, stating, "I’d prepared for the bout not to go the distance but that was quick." He detailed his strategy, explaining, "I was working on the fundamentals with decisive jabs to the body, and then he succumbed to a barrage of punches with a minute to go of the second round of a scheduled ten."
A Dream Realised and Future Aspirations
Reflecting on this career milestone, Hayden added, "I’ve realised a dream winning these belts. Anything else will be a bonus. I’ve proved that I’m more than just a steady boxer. I’ve developed knockout power. I had a game plan: use my speed, master my reflexes, and land the finishing shot." Despite the high-pressure occasion, Hayden remained composed, attributing his calmness to the vocal support from fans and confidence from rigorous training.
He shared, "The vocal support quelled any nerves I might have had, although confidence that I hadn’t cut any corners in training also helped. The fact that so many have consistently supported me these last four years as a professional makes it all worthwhile, and I’m massively grateful. I dedicate this victory to my supporters; I’ll never let them down." Hayden also noted, "My boxing career might have been a bit slow taking off, but now it has, and I’m going to keep rewarding those who support me."
Community Support and Team Effort
This support includes a loyal contingent from the secure hospital where Hayden works part-time. Mel Richards, who leads the group, expressed their pride, saying, "Everyone would love him as a son. He’s such an inspiration for all young men." Hayden was quick to credit his inner circle for his ascent, noting, "I’ve learnt it takes a team to build a boxer. My manager Dave Allen is my inspiration, but chiropractor Kal Hammond-Race, sports therapist Beth Smith, and nutritionist Matt Hynd have also been instrumental in contributing to this success. Thanks to my many sponsors who’ve made this investment possible."
Thriving Local Boxing Scene
The 26-year-old, who chose 'Don’t Stop Me Now' as his walkout song, is now at the forefront of a thriving local scene. Four years after Doncaster received city status, the sport is booming. Hayden and his fellow local fighters are already planning their return to the ring on May 16, featuring on the undercard of Dave Allen’s heavyweight clash with Croatian Filip Hrgović.
'The Rise of Doncaster' was organised by Sheffield-based promoter Kas Hussain of My Man Management, in partnership with Rhino LA. This marked the eighth show for the 33-year-old Hussain since establishing his company in 2024, highlighting the growing momentum in the region's boxing community.
