A new chapter in Welsh sport was written this weekend when the first-ever Wales Women’s Over-70s Masters hockey squad took to the field in Belfast. The newly formed team faced traditional rivals England, Scotland and England LX at the Home Nations tournament. This marked the first time a Welsh women’s squad of this age group has competed on such a stage.
Decades of Experience and New Beginnings
Some players carry decades of experience, while others were pulling on the red shirt for the very first time, proof that it is never too late to chase a dream. “What unites them is not age, but passion. A passion for the game, for their teammates and for Wales,” said head coach Hilary Williams.
“Every training session has been a masterclass in commitment. Their work rate is fierce, their humour infectious and their determination utterly inspiring.”
Inspiration Beyond the Pitch
Together, they embody a simple but powerful message: sport has no age limit. She added: “They inspire not just each other, but everyone who sees them play.”
The squad’s journey reflects the very best of Welsh sporting values – grit, unity and pride. When the team walked out wearing the Welsh dragon, they were not just making history, but reshaping it and showing future generations what is possible.
