West Brom Captain Jed Wallace Sidelined with Calf Injury
West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a significant blow as club captain Jed Wallace has been ruled out for several weeks due to a calf injury sustained in training. The experienced winger, who has been a key player in the Baggies' recent unbeaten run, will miss crucial matches in the Championship relegation battle.
Morrison Expresses Disappointment and Hope for Return
Head coach James Morrison revealed his emotional reaction to the injury, stating, "I could have cried when I saw him go down because he's been arguably our best player lately." He emphasized Wallace's importance to the team, highlighting his leadership and high performance levels. Despite the setback, Morrison remains optimistic, noting there is an outside chance Wallace could return for the final two games of the season, adding, "Touch wood and fingers crossed he might be back for the last game or two."
Injury Adds to West Brom's Squad Challenges
Wallace joins fellow wingers Karlan Grant and Mikey Johnston on the sidelines, leaving Morrison with limited options. In the recent 2-2 draw with Wrexham, where Albion squandered a 2-0 half-time lead, Morrison turned to teenage Villa loanee Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, with Ollie Bostock as the only alternative. This injury crisis complicates West Brom's fight to avoid relegation.
Wallace's Role Off the Pitch Emphasized
Morrison has called on Wallace to remain a positive influence despite his absence from play. The captain was present in the dressing room for the Wrexham match, and Morrison has requested he continue to be around the squad daily. "He’s got a big part to play off the pitch now," Morrison said, underscoring the need for leadership during this critical period.
Upcoming Crucial Match Against Blackburn
West Brom quickly shift focus to a vital six-pointer against Blackburn Rovers on Monday, with 7,500 traveling fans expected at Ewood Park. This match gains added importance as Blackburn, managed by Michael O'Neill, were the only relegation-battling team to secure a win on Good Friday, defeating Birmingham City 1-0. The Baggies will need to rally without their captain to secure crucial points in their survival bid.
