University of Birmingham Wins National Tennis Award for Community Outreach
The University of Birmingham has been honoured with the prestigious University of the Year title at the LTA Awards, presented by Lexus. This recognition highlights the institution's exceptional efforts to broaden tennis participation across schools in economically disadvantaged areas, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.
A Celebration of Dedication and Impact
The awards ceremony took place at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, London, on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The LTA Awards, first launched in 2015 by former LTA President Cathie Sabin OBE, celebrate the passion, dedication, and impact of individuals and organisations that help tennis and padel thrive throughout Britain. With over 3,000 nominations submitted across 14 categories, the event reflects the incredible depth of talent, service, and innovation within British tennis and padel.
Bridging the Gap in Birmingham
Jack Crossley, 31, Head of Tennis at the University of Birmingham, emphasised the importance of this outreach. "Birmingham is a major city with affluent areas near the university, but adjacent to these are much more deprived communities where opportunities to play tennis are limited," he said. "It's crucial to broaden perspectives and introduce tennis into those schools, ensuring everyone has access to the sport."
Fraser Chapman, 22, Vice-President, added, "Bringing the community together and providing a focus for the club is incredibly rewarding. University sports clubs can sometimes become stagnant, so effecting positive change serves as a great motivator for all involved."
Recognition from the LTA
LTA President Roy Colabawalla, speaking after the event, praised the winners for their contributions. "The LTA Awards allow us to honour those who keep our sports vibrant at the grassroots level," he stated. "The dedication of volunteers, coaches, officials, and organisers is what opens up tennis and padel to communities across Britain. Every finalist demonstrates remarkable commitment, creating opportunities and inspiring future generations of players."
Looking forward, the LTA aims to continue making tennis and padel welcoming, accessible, and exciting for everyone, regardless of background or location. The University of Birmingham's achievement underscores the power of sports in fostering community cohesion and providing equal opportunities for all.
