Bromsgrove PT, 60, Nominated for National Coaching Award
Midlands personal trainer up for national award

A 60-year-old personal trainer from Bromsgrove in the Midlands has been shortlisted for a prestigious national honour, recognising his exceptional success in transforming the lives of his clients.

Inspiring an Older Generation

Ian Northcott, the founder of Mercian Fitness, has been announced as a finalist for the UK Coaching Change a Life Award, sponsored by Sport England. This award celebrates coaches who have empowered and inspired individuals through their dedicated work.

Reacting to the nomination, Ian said he felt incredibly proud and humbled. "Coaching has never been about accolades for me; it's about people," he explained. "To see the impact of my work acknowledged on a national stage is really special because it reflects the courage and consistency of my clients."

A Unique Approach to Fitness

Ian began his coaching journey in 2015 with Nordic Walking classes, later transitioning to personal training during the COVID-19 pandemic. His client base is unique, consisting of over 20 individuals, most of whom are in their 70s, aiming to help them "find themselves again."

Many of his clients manage long-term health or mobility issues. Ian's methodology focuses on enhancing their quality of life through specialised heart rate training, including heart rate variability, to ensure all exercise is both safe and effective. "We help them improve their fitness so their life is better," he outlined.

He identified a gap in the fitness sector, which often overlooks older adults who may not feel comfortable in public gyms. "My work focuses on finding ways to do the things younger people do, but making it safer for the older generation," Ian admitted. "I show them it's never too late to get stronger, healthier, and more confident, no matter where they're starting from."

Life-Changing Results and a Lifetime of Service

Through a combination of online programmes and one-to-one coaching, Ian, who was named UK Coaching Online Coach of the Year in 2023, has achieved remarkable results. He has guided clients to walk Hadrian's Wall, climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and even win the Age Group British Rowing Indoor Championships.

However, it's the everyday victories that matter most. "Grandparents have come to me and said they can't get down onto the floor to play with their grandkids and it's ruining their relationship," Ian shared. "They then follow my plan, and their mobility is improved. That's massive and now their quality of life is much better."

This drive to help others is in his DNA. Before retiring in 2015, Ian served in the British Army and the police force, where he was involved in charity work. He continues to give back by volunteering with the mental health text service 'Shout'.

"Great coaching can completely change the direction of someone's life," he reflected. "It's not just about improving fitness, it's about restoring confidence, identity, and independence. The right coach can help someone move from fear and self-doubt to possibility and pride."

The UK Coaching Awards, regarded as the most prestigious event in the coaching community, will be held on December 4th at The Queen's Hotel in Leeds. The ceremony will celebrate coaches from every level for their contribution to a healthier society.
