Wolverhampton School Submits Plans for New Floodlit 3G Football Pitch
Plans have been officially submitted to replace a defunct sports pitch at a Wolverhampton school with a state-of-the-art floodlit 3G facility. The application, lodged with City of Wolverhampton Council, outlines a multi-million pound expansion project at Colton Hills Community School in Goldthorn Park.
The school's existing pitch has been forced to close after reaching the end of its viable life, according to documents accompanying the planning submission. A statement included with the application emphasized the need for a replacement, noting that the pitch was an important part of the school's sporting facilities and requires a higher quality alternative with greater user value.
Multi-Use Sports Facility
The proposed new artificial pitch would accommodate a full-size 11-a-side football pitch that could also be divided into five-a-side and nine-a-side configurations. This flexible design aims to maximize usage for both school and community sporting activities.
The facility would operate under a shared schedule:
- School use: Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm
- Community use: Weekdays 4pm to 8pm, weekends 8am to 4pm
The planning documents indicate that existing car parking and proposed changing room facilities on site would be sufficient to serve the needs of this additional sports provision.
Part of Broader School Expansion
This sports pitch replacement forms part of a comprehensive expansion program for Colton Hills Community School. Earlier this year, City of Wolverhampton Council approved plans to refurbish and remodel the school to create space for 79 additional pupils.
The expansion work includes:
- A single-storey extension to the sixth form building providing new changing rooms and showers
- A new archive and record office
- Another extension to create a larger gym and bigger changing rooms
The school in Jeremy Road has already accommodated a temporary surge in pupil numbers through a bulge class introduced in September. To meet anticipated future demand, the school will undergo further expansion starting September next year, with permanent expansion scheduled from September 2027.
Increased Capacity and Special Needs Provision
The school's published admission number (PAN) will increase from 161 to 240, providing an additional 79 Year 7 places from September 2027. By September 2031, the school will offer 395 permanent places in total.
In addition to the sports facilities and general expansion, Colton Hills Community School is planning to establish a special educational needs (SEND) resource base specifically for pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. A council cabinet report discussed earlier this year indicated this resource base is expected to cost more than £6 million.
The combination of new sports facilities, expanded capacity, and specialized educational support represents a significant investment in the Goldthorn Park area, aiming to enhance both educational and community resources for years to come.
