Walsall could soon be home to a new, high-quality sports and leisure venue, following the submission of formal plans to convert a disused industrial unit.
Proposed Facility Details and Location
The application, put forward by EMS Design Ltd, seeks to transform the existing building on the Bloxwich Lane Industrial Estate near Junction 10. The site was last occupied by a logistics company and is currently underused.
The core of the proposal is the creation of five indoor padel courts, a fast-growing racket sport. The plans also include associated changing facilities and spectator seating to accommodate visitors.
Complementing the sporting offer, the company hopes to establish a café on-site, providing light refreshments for up to 25 players and guests. The existing car park, featuring 72 spaces including disabled and cycle parking near the entrance, will be retained for public use.
Community Benefits and Operating Hours
If approved, the development is expected to create three new full-time jobs for the local area. The facility would operate from 6am until midnight, seven days a week, offering extensive access for the community.
In a statement, EMS Design Ltd said the project would bring a vacant building back into active use while supporting local employment. They emphasised the facility's role in promoting wellbeing and recreation for Walsall residents.
Next Steps and Local Impact
The plans are now awaiting a decision from the local planning authority. This proposal represents a significant investment in local leisure infrastructure, aiming to provide a modern sports destination.
The conversion aligns with broader goals of regenerating industrial sites and enhancing community health offerings. The introduction of padel courts would also cater to the sport's increasing popularity across the UK.
