Leicestershire Tennis Stars Set to Shine at Wimbledon 2024
Leicestershire Tennis Stars Head to Wimbledon

Several talented young tennis players from Leicestershire are poised to showcase their skills at Wimbledon after achieving remarkable success on the courts. The stars include both past and present students from a specialised local sports academy who have earned spots in the famous tournament.

Direct Entries and Wildcards

Katie Boulter has gained direct entry into the women's singles competition following her recent victories. She will be joined by fellow rising stars Mimi Xu and Mika Stojsavljevic, who received special invitations to play. Former boys' champion Henry Searle is also returning to compete in the men's singles qualifiers this summer. All four athletes will double their chances of success by playing in the doubles matches too.

Training at Loughborough University National Tennis Academy

The players trained at the Loughborough University National Tennis Academy, which helps elite young people balance education with professional sport. This programme provides high-quality schooling and boarding options at local high schools to help teenagers succeed.

Toni O’Donovan, academy programme co-ordinator at Loughborough Schools Foundation, said: “We couldn't be prouder of these pupils. Competing in tennis at the highest level while keeping up with schoolwork, both at Loughborough and on the road, takes real commitment. They are outstanding role models and a genuine inspiration to staff and pupils alike.”

Historic Achievements

During her time at the academy, Mika made sporting history by becoming the first British girl to win the US Open Girls' title in 15 years. She also became the youngest woman to reach the quarter-finals at the Birmingham Open after defeating a player ranked 135 in the world.

Current student Hollie Smart recently made it to the quarter-finals of the girls' doubles at the French Open. Her classmate Daniella Britton also performed brilliantly in a special knockout tournament on June 23.

Academy Impact

Sean England, head of education and wellbeing at the academy, said: “The success of the LUNTA programme speaks for itself. Since launching the partnership, we've seen pupils develop not just as players but as young athletes who understand what it takes to compete at the top level. It's a fantastic example of what's possible when a school is willing to invest in genuine sporting excellence alongside academic achievement.”
