Birmingham Airport Cancels Flights to Dubai and Doha Amid Iran Conflict

Flights to key Middle Eastern destinations from Birmingham Airport were cancelled today, Monday, March 9, as a direct result of the ongoing Iran war. This disruption has impacted popular routes for travellers across the Midlands, highlighting the broader regional tensions affecting air travel.

Specific Flight Cancellations Announced

The 2.10pm Qatar Airways service to Doha Hamad was pulled from the schedule. This decision comes as the Qatar Government prioritises repatriation flights for stranded passengers caught in the conflict zone. Additionally, the 8.50pm Emirates flight to Dubai, a major favourite with travellers in the Midlands, was also grounded, leaving many passengers seeking alternative arrangements.

Official Statements from Airports and Authorities

Doha Hamad Airport released a statement explaining the situation. "Following the temporary authorisation from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority confirming a partial resumption of airflight movement, Hamad International Airport will operate a limited number of repatriation flights for stranded passengers," the airport said. "The temporary closure of Qatar’s airspace remains in effect due to the current situation in the region, which is and remains beyond our control."

Dubai Airport also addressed the issue on its website, urging caution. "Passengers are reminded not to proceed to the airport at this time and to contact their respective airlines directly for the latest update regarding their flights," the statement read. It confirmed a partial resumption of operations from March 7, with some flights operating out of Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC).

The airport further advised, "Travellers are urged to not travel to the DXB or DWC unless they have been contacted by their airline that their flight is confirmed, as schedules continue to change." Dubai Airports emphasised its commitment to safety, stating, "We continue to closely monitor the situation in coordination with relevant authorities and our focus remains on maintaining the highest standards of operational safety, security, and wellbeing of passengers and staff."

Guidance from the British Foreign Office

The British Foreign Office has issued specific guidance for British nationals affected by the flight cancellations. "Register your interest in UK Government flights from the United Arab Emirates," the office stated. "This service is for British nationals to tell the UK government you're interested in UK government flights from the United Arab Emirates."

Once registered, individuals will receive important updates about booking for flights. The Foreign Office also reminded travellers to check the latest travel advice for the United Arab Emirates and noted that registration is only available to those holding a valid UK passport.

This series of cancellations underscores the significant impact of the Iran war on international air travel, particularly from Birmingham Airport, which serves as a key hub for Midlands residents. Passengers are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines for real-time updates and to follow official travel advisories during this period of uncertainty.
