Birmingham Airport Record May with 1.3M Passengers and New Eatery
Birmingham Airport May Record 1.3M Passengers

Birmingham Airport has reported a record-breaking May, with 1.3 million holidaymakers passing through the terminal. This marks a 3.2% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer of Birmingham Airport.

Popular Destinations and New Routes

The most popular destinations for passengers in May included Dublin, Mallorca, Amsterdam, and Alicante. The airport has also launched new routes this month, including Nice with easyJet and Jersey with Jet2.com.

Hazelwood stated: “It has been a record-breaking month for passenger numbers here at BHX, with a 3.2% increase year-on-year. There has been a fantastic energy across the airport as our development plans continue to come to fruition, alongside the launch of new routes.”

New On-Site Eatery

The airport welcomed a new on-site partner, McDonald's, which is conveniently located for customers to grab a meal before flying or upon arrival. This is part of a multi-million-pound refurbishment that includes new restaurants in the departure lounge.

£300 Million Transformation Programme

The record month comes amid the airport's £300 million transformation programme, with £75 million being invested annually to upgrade the airfield and improve passenger experience. Key investments include:

  • New screening technology that allows passengers to leave liquids and electronics in their bags, speeding up processing times.
  • A £40 million investment in the airfield, including reconstructing sections of taxiways, building new aircraft stands, upgrading lighting, and general runway maintenance.
  • A £10 million upgrade to the arrivals hub, adding a new baggage carousel, expanding border control areas, and rolling out more self-service drop-off lanes and e-gates.

Sustainability Efforts

Upgrades to heating and cooling systems, additional solar panels, and the construction of an on-site solar farm are underway to help the airport reach net-zero by 2033.

Hazelwood added: “We are now looking ahead and preparing for what promises to be a busy summer period.” The airport is committed to completing these ambitious plans through 2029.
