The head of the International Energy Agency has issued a stark warning that Europe may have just six weeks of jet fuel remaining, threatening to throw millions of summer holidays into chaos. This alarming revelation comes amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has led to the closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz, a key route for jet fuel supplies.
Potential Flight Cancellations from June
Experts are now predicting that flights could face cancellations starting in June if the situation does not improve rapidly. The industry is scrambling to bring in fuel from alternative sources worldwide to make up for the potential shortages. A Government spokesperson told the BBC that authorities are working closely with fuel suppliers and airlines to ensure people keep moving and businesses are supported.
The spokesperson added: "UK airlines are clear that they are currently not seeing disruption to supply." However, the International Energy Agency report paints a more concerning picture, indicating that if Europe cannot replace more than 50% of its Middle Eastern imports, physical shortages may emerge at select airports, resulting in flight cancellations.
