UK tourists arriving in Majorca from June 17 are being warned of potential chaos as airport staff at Palma Airport plan a 24-hour strike. The industrial action, part of an ongoing dispute over 'on-call' working conditions and excessive hours, threatens to disrupt travel for thousands of holidaymakers.
Strike Details
The strike is scheduled for June 17, with further walkouts possible. Staff have been staging protests every Saturday since May 25, demanding changes to working practices that require them to remain available by phone 24/7 and work beyond their contracted hours.
EES System Adds to Delays
Majorca has also been affected by the new Exit and Entry System (EES), implemented this spring. One British family reported queuing for over two hours in the heat at Palma Airport. On Reddit, they described the scene as 'shocking', with young children and babies crying, and elderly passengers fainting. They noted that all e-gates appeared to be down, forcing around 1,000 people to squeeze through just two gates.
Tourist Numbers on the Rise
Despite the disruptions, the Majorca Hoteliers Federation expects an increase in British tourists this summer. President Javier Vich stated, 'We will have more British tourists this year than we did last year.' In 2025, an estimated 2.2 million Britons visited the island, with numbers set to rise further in 2026. However, there is concern about the German market, as bookings are coming in later than usual. Around four million German tourists visited Majorca last year, and any decline could have a significant local impact.
