Car Park Chaos: Motorist Tries to Lift Barrier in Wolverhampton

Car Park Chaos as Motorist Attempts to Lift Barrier Manually

Broad Street Car Park in Wolverhampton experienced significant congestion and long queues on Saturday, February 14, as drivers flocked to take advantage of a £2 evening parking charge. The situation became so chaotic that one frustrated motorist was witnessed trying to lift the exit barrier with his bare hands in a desperate attempt to leave.

Popular Location Leads to Overcrowding

The car park, located within walking distance of popular venues such as The Grand Theatre, Lockworks Cinema, and The Halls at the University of Wolverhampton, is a favored choice for patrons attending events. However, this popularity has led to stressful exits, particularly when many vehicles attempt to depart simultaneously after evening performances or Wolves football matches.

One woman, who returned to her vehicle around 9:30 p.m. after watching Wuthering Heights at the cinema, described the scene. "I saw a large crowd heading to the car park from the theatre up the road," she said. "By the time we got to the pay station, there was a huge queue."

Barrier Issues and Safety Concerns

The witness reported that one driver couldn't get through the barrier as it failed to lift, forcing them to reverse in a crowded area. "It was so crowded with cars and people, they struggled to do so. It was an accident waiting to happen," she added. She then saw a man attempting to manually lift the barrier, though it eventually opened on its own.

"It was shocking," she remarked. "It's a great car park given the location, but something should be done about how cramped it is for cars trying to leave at the same time."

Council Response and Future Measures

City of Wolverhampton Council has acknowledged the issues and plans to implement measures to improve traffic flow at Broad Street Car Park. A council spokesperson stated, "Broad Street has always been a busy car park during events, and we would always advise people to allow more time for journeys at these peak periods."

The spokesperson highlighted that during the £2 evening offer period from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., drivers can now pay on arrival via touchscreen stations to reduce waiting times. Additionally, the council reminded motorists that illegally modified number plates can prevent ANPR cameras from recognizing vehicles, causing delays at exit barriers.

Broader Parking Changes in Wolverhampton

This incident comes as the council announces plans to extend the £2 evening charge to most council car parks in the city starting in April, alongside a new £3.50 all-day charge. Recent upgrades to ANPR technology at Broad Street and other car parks aim to reduce maintenance costs and eliminate third-party app fees for users.

The council's efforts follow engagement with local businesses and are intended to enhance the overall parking experience while addressing congestion issues like those witnessed on February 14.
