Council Intervenes in Bitter Parking Row Near Iconic Birmingham Venue
Birmingham City Council has announced it will step up parking patrols in a bid to resolve a heated dispute over illegal parking in Aston, near the city's famous Villa Park stadium. The conflict involves two local businesses—Majestic Conference & Banqueting Hall and Stala Autos—both based on Witton Lane, who have accused each other of causing parking chaos.
Accusations Fly Between Businesses
Majestic director Taz Ulfat claims that Stala Autos has been parking illegally, severely impacting his business. "I'm still having the same issue," Ulfat told local media. "I've called the councillors and raised this, but to no avail. This is so unfair that every day I have so many cars here during the daytime."
Ulfat explained that the parked vehicles block the frontage of his venue, which recently underwent a full refurbishment. "People can't see the front of the building at all," he said. "The address and contact details are always blocked for people to see. This site is the former Aston Transport Museum, and I have looked after the frontage for many years, especially since it's right opposite Aston Villa. But I get cars parked here and rubbish thrown outside on a daily basis."
Counterclaims from Stala Autos
In response, Stala Autos has denied any wrongdoing and shifted blame back to Majestic Banqueting. A spokesperson for the mechanics argued that the real issue stems from wedding events at the banqueting hall. "The cars on the road are not ours," the spokesperson stated. "When weddings are on, the road gets blocked for two hours. With not enough space inside, Majestic Banqueting customers are parking across the road and even on both sides. I don't know why people are blaming us."
The spokesperson added that they had previously moved a car when contacted but emphasized, "It's not his road at the end of the day, and roads get blocked for hours because of the weddings." This marks a reversal from March, when Stala Autos accepted responsibility and promised improvements.
Council's Response and Enforcement Plans
A Birmingham City Council spokesperson addressed the situation, urging motorists to park safely and legally. "Motorists should always park safely and legally and be mindful of other road users and their environment," the spokesperson said. "Our enforcement officers will take action where appropriate, and we are looking at additional patrols in this area. We would of course encourage people to use public transport or walk where possible."
The council's intervention comes as the dispute has escalated, with both businesses reporting daily disruptions. The increased patrols aim to enforce parking regulations more strictly in the area, which is a stone's throw from Villa Park, a major landmark in Birmingham.
Impact on Local Community and Business
The parking row highlights broader issues of congestion and accessibility in Aston, affecting not only the businesses involved but also residents and visitors. With Majestic Banqueting hosting events like weddings and Stala Autos operating a mechanics service, the limited parking space on Witton Lane has become a flashpoint for conflict.
As the council moves forward with enhanced enforcement, local stakeholders hope for a resolution that ensures fair access and minimizes disruptions. The situation underscores the importance of responsible parking in urban areas, particularly near popular venues like Villa Park.
