Drivers are warned they are less likely to get away with breaking MOT rules as new advanced cameras hit the roads. The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras allow officials to check details such as MOTs, tax, and insurance by reading number plates.
New Cameras in Gloucestershire
New cameras have been switched on in Gloucestershire, and the advanced technology is expected to be rolled out more widely over the coming months and years. This is part of a crackdown on MOT rules that could see motorists hit with heavy fines.
Intelligent Cameras on the Rise
It continues a trend of cameras becoming more 'intelligent' on the roads. Some are powered by artificial intelligence and will be able to detect mobile phone and seatbelt offences. The Gloucestershire cameras will also monitor other traffic offences such as yellow boxes, banned turns, and bus lanes.
Zack Rahman, general manager of Vertu BYD Hartlepool, warned: "Car admin is easier than it has ever been. Whether it’s paying your car tax online or adding a simple calendar reminder a month before your MOT is due, it only takes a couple of minutes and can save you a lot of stress. With more cameras going live, it is worth getting ahead of any documentation issues now, because if a case ends up in court, the average wait is around three months longer than it was a decade ago."
