Drivers Warned: 3 Trees to Avoid Parking Under in England
Three trees to avoid parking under to protect your car

Motorists across England are being urged to think twice about where they leave their vehicles this autumn and winter, with a specific warning issued about parking under certain types of trees.

The Three Worst Offending Trees for Car Paintwork

According to AutoTrader's LCV Reviewer, Tom Roberts, three common UK tree species pose a significant risk to a car's exterior finish. The worst offenders are oak trees, sycamore trees, and maple trees. These trees release substances that can lead to costly and unsightly damage if left untreated.

Tom Roberts explained the science behind the problem: "Many common UK trees, like oak and sycamore, release tannins and organic acids where their wet leaves land." He stated that these substances can actively stain or even corrode a car's paintwork if they are not removed promptly.

How Tree Leaves and Sap Cause Damage

The issue is twofold. Firstly, the tannins leached from fallen leaves can create stubborn brown spots on the paint. However, the sap produced by these trees can be even more problematic.

"Becoming sticky with a substance called honeydew, which is produced by aphids feeding on the leaves, the sap can land on cars and create a breeding ground for mould," Roberts said. He also noted that the leaves themselves create debris that can impact the paintwork.

Maple tree sap is particularly troublesome, as it tends to harden and bond tightly to the paint when left, making it incredibly difficult to remove without professional help. Cars with light-coloured paint are at even greater risk, as stains are more visible and challenging to treat.

Practical Steps to Protect Your Vehicle

Tom Roberts offered several key pieces of advice for drivers. For those with no alternative but to park under a tree, he recommends removing fallen leaves from the roof and body regularly to prevent prolonged exposure. Washing your car frequently, even during the colder months, is also crucial.

He issued a specific warning about DIY repairs: "Be aware that removing hardened sap on your own can make the damage worse, so it’s best to visit a professional detailer to avoid further degradation."

As a preventative measure, applying a protective layer of wax or sealant can provide an extra line of defence. This protection helps avoid costly repairs and maintains the car's resale value. Larger vehicles like MPVs are at higher risk due to their greater roof surface area, which catches more leaves.

In summary, while parking under an oak, sycamore, or maple might offer shade or shelter, the potential damage to your car's paintwork makes it a risky choice that could hit your wallet hard.
