The Met Office has warned that showers and strong winds could sweep across the UK during the upcoming May bank holiday weekend. Forecasters predict changeable conditions, with low pressure systems becoming more likely.
The next bank holiday in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland falls on Monday, May 4, the early May bank holiday. In its long-range forecast covering Thursday, April 30, to Saturday, May 9, the Met Office stated: "High pressure is likely to lie close to the UK at the start of this period. Most places will be dry with sunny spells and light winds, although there could be some overnight mist and fog."
However, conditions are expected to become more unsettled as the bank holiday approaches. "Into the first week of May, conditions will probably become more changeable with low pressure systems becoming more likely. This means an increasing chance of showers or longer spells of rain, with a risk of strong winds at times. Temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above normal," the forecast added.
Looking further ahead, the Met Office warned of a continued risk of strong winds and further showers. In its long-range forecast for Sunday, May 10, to Sunday, May 24, it said: "Low pressure systems will probably dominate across the UK at the start of this period. This means showers or longer spells of rain are likely at times, heavy in places with a risk of strong winds. Temperatures will probably be close to or slightly below normal." The outlook suggests that more settled, drier conditions may develop later in the month, with temperatures perhaps rising slightly above normal.
