The RAC has issued a stark warning to motorists, urging them to postpone non-essential journeys as the UK braces for a red extreme heatwave. The Met Office has placed Birmingham under an amber weather alert, escalating to a red heat alert on Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures forecast to hit 39°C across the East Midlands and Southern England.
RAC Urges Caution for Drivers Without Air Conditioning
RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis emphasized the severity of the situation: “Red extreme heat warnings are rare and we urge everyone to take them seriously this week. Drivers whose vehicles don't have effective air conditioning should strongly consider postponing any non-essential car journeys until the Met Office’s weather warnings are lifted and temperatures drop.” He added that if travel is unavoidable, drivers should plan to travel during cooler times of the day, particularly when transporting vulnerable individuals such as young children or older adults.
Breakdown Numbers Expected to Surge
The RAC anticipates a significant spike in breakdowns, with volumes potentially 20% higher than typical for a Monday in late June. “Our last busiest June was three years ago, but there’s every chance that could be eclipsed this week as temperatures soar,” Dennis noted. The organization is asking drivers to be patient, as breakdown providers will prioritize the most urgent roadside jobs.
Essential Checks Before Driving in Extreme Heat
To reduce the risk of breakdowns, the RAC recommends simple checks under the bonnet before setting out. Motorists should ensure oil levels are sufficient and coolant sits between the ‘min’ and ‘max’ markers. Dennis advised: “Top it up yourself when the engine is cold and have it inspected by an RAC mobile mechanic or reputable garage as soon as possible.”
At high temperatures, road surfaces can soften, and councils may deploy gritting vehicles to apply granite dust for maintaining traction—a sight normally reserved for winter. Drivers should not be alarmed by water beneath their vehicle, as it is often condensation from the air conditioning system.
Tips for Keeping Your Car Cool
The RAC has provided practical advice for motorists to stay safe and comfortable during the heatwave:
- Don’t leave home without an emergency breakdown kit.
- Park in the shade to prevent the interior from overheating.
- Cover leather seats with a blanket or jacket to avoid burns.
- Understand your car’s air conditioning system; check the owner’s manual for optimal settings.
- Carry water and soft drinks to prevent dehydration, which can impair concentration.
- Use a cool bag or box to keep drinks and snacks fresh.
What to Do in Case of a Breakdown
If a breakdown occurs, the RAC advises having plenty of water for all passengers, along with snacks that won’t melt. Hats, umbrellas, and sunscreen are recommended for protection against the sun. A fully charged phone is essential, as is an emergency medical kit. For those traveling with pets, ensure they are secure and have access to food and water. Drivers are also urged to download and log into their breakdown service’s app, such as myRAC, to expedite assistance.
