FCDO Warns UK Tourists in Bolivia: Stay in Accommodation Due to Strike
UK Tourists in Bolivia Warned to Stay Indoors Amid Strike

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated travel advice for Bolivia, urging British nationals to remain in their accommodation due to a dangerous transport strike. The warning comes after the interprovincial transport union of La Paz announced an indefinite strike starting on 6 May 2026.

Key Details of the Strike

The FCDO stated: "The interprovincial transport union of La Paz announced an indefinite strike from 6 May 2026. If a bus company sells you a ticket ‘condicionado’ it means they will not guarantee arrival to your destination. Check local advice before travelling and do not cross blockades."

Tourists are advised to stay in safe accommodation along affected routes and follow local authority guidance. The FCDO emphasized that walking on certain roads may be dangerous due to ongoing violence and altitude effects.

Affected Routes

The FCDO advises against using the following roads until further notice:

  • Between La Paz and Copacabana (Lake Titicaca)
  • Between La Paz and Oruro
  • Between La Paz and Uyuni via Oruro
  • Between La Paz and Rurrenabaque

Flights continue to operate normally, providing an alternative travel option.

Additional Warnings

The FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to the Chapare region of Cochabamba Department, including Villa Tunari and highway routes 4 and 24 that pass through Chapare.

British nationals stuck in road blockades or requiring urgent consular assistance should call +591 2-2010020.

No travel can be guaranteed safe. Travelers should research destinations and obtain appropriate insurance covering their itinerary, planned activities, and emergency expenses.

The FCDO provides travel advice to help make informed decisions. Updates are available on the FCDO website, and email notifications can be signed up for when advice changes.
