UK summer holiday flights are at risk as the country faces a potential jet fuel shortage, with analysts warning of critically low supplies and possible rationing. The UK is reportedly the most exposed nation in Europe to such a crisis, throwing holidaymakers' plans into doubt.
Goldman Sachs Warning
Analysts at Goldman Sachs have highlighted that the UK holds no strategic jet fuel reserves and is the largest net importer in Europe, leaving commercial inventories as the primary buffer. They warned that inventories in some countries, particularly the UK, could fall to critically low levels, increasing the likelihood of rationing measures.
Airlines Under Pressure
Wizz Air boss József Váradi told the Telegraph that airlines with weak liquidity positions will come under immense pressure by September, as summer demand drives up prices. He noted that airlines typically face financial strain twice a year, in September and February.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary stated that Europe is unlikely to face jet fuel shortages in May, but there is no 100 percent guarantee for June, July, and August. He mentioned that suppliers report no significant issues until early June, but the outlook beyond that remains uncertain.
As the summer approaches, UK passengers are urged to stay informed as the situation develops.
