A major train operator is set to significantly enhance rail connectivity to a UK airport with the introduction of all-night services as part of its new timetable, launching next month.
New 24-Hour Services
TransPennine Express (TPE) will add eight new services from May 17, 2026, delivering an approximately hourly train service between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This round-the-clock service aims to provide greater flexibility for passengers travelling to and from the airport at any time.
Additional Improvements
TPE will also introduce a new weekday stop at Dewsbury on the 08:05 Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly service. Furthermore, the operator will run two additional services per day during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which runs from Monday 3 August until Friday 4 September. These extra trains will operate alongside the usual timetable to help festivalgoers travel home after late-night performances, including live music, comedy, and dance.
Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TPE, said: “Although most of our services are unchanged, we encourage customers to take a moment to check any journeys they make regularly. We’re pleased to be introducing services that give customers more choice, added flexibility, and an improved overall experience when travelling with us.”
Passenger Reactions
TPE also reminded passengers to check journey information before travelling, as planned engineering work may result in some temporary changes to services. One passenger replied to the news saying: “I would say it is more just a reinstatement of the service following a period in which similar had been cut. Because I am sure I caught a train from Leeds to Manchester airport at 2 or 3am about 5 or 6 years ago.” Another added: “I suppose that it's cheaper than building a new link road, like the A555. It's amazing how easy it's being made to get to the airport. It's a pity that it's so difficult to get anywhere else.”
