Cows blocked the railway line in Staffordshire for more than four hours on Tuesday, causing significant disruption to train services. The animals wandered onto the tracks near Lichfield, forcing operators to suspend services on the line between Lichfield Trent Valley and Lichfield City.
Details of the Disruption
The incident began at around 10:30 AM when the cows were first spotted on the line. Train services were halted as staff attempted to safely remove the animals. The disruption affected both passenger and freight services, with delays of up to 60 minutes reported on some routes.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "We apologise to passengers for the disruption caused by the cows on the line near Lichfield. Our teams worked quickly and safely to herd the animals away from the tracks."
Impact on Services
West Midlands Railway confirmed that services between Lichfield Trent Valley and Lichfield City were suspended for over four hours. Passengers were advised to seek alternative transport or delay their journeys. The disruption also affected CrossCountry services, with some trains diverted or cancelled.
According to Network Rail, the cows were eventually herded to a secure field, and services resumed shortly after 2:45 PM. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the cows' escape is under investigation.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time animals have disrupted rail services in the region. In 2022, a similar incident involving sheep caused delays on the same line. Network Rail has urged farmers to ensure fencing is secure to prevent animals from accessing railway land.
A Network Rail spokesperson added: "We are working with local farmers to improve fencing and reduce the risk of future incidents. Safety is our top priority."
Passenger Reactions
Passengers expressed frustration on social media, with some reporting missed appointments and delayed commutes. One passenger said: "I was stuck on the train for over an hour with no updates. It's frustrating, but at least no one was hurt."
The incident highlights the challenges of maintaining railway safety in rural areas where wildlife and livestock can pose unexpected hazards. Network Rail continues to monitor the situation and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
