The legendary Flying Scotsman, one of the world's most famous steam locomotives, is poised for a triumphant return to Birmingham, offering passengers a rare chance to travel behind this historic engine. The iconic machine will operate a series of exclusive journeys and luxury dining experiences from the city centre during the February half-term holiday.
Journey Details and Exclusive Dining Experiences
The meticulously planned schedule runs from Saturday, 14 February to Saturday, 21 February 2026. The headline events are three special Shakespeare Express services on the first and last days of the visit, hauling passengers between Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon. These two-hour return trips offer a choice of luxurious onboard dining in the elegant Pullman carriages.
Passengers can book brunch, afternoon tea, or a three-course evening dinner as part of the experience. For those preferring a simpler journey, Tourist class coaches with large picture windows and access to a buffet car are also available. The dining experiences start from £83.74 per person, while train rides without the culinary extras begin at £48.76 per person.
Photo Opportunities and Short Journeys
From Wednesday to Friday of that week, the Flying Scotsman will also lead five shorter, one-hour return trips departing throughout the day from Birmingham. These journeys present a perfect photo opportunity for enthusiasts, with the locomotive positioned at Moor Street station, offering a stunning backdrop of classic steam travel against the cityscape.
Organised by Vintage Trains, the entire programme has been crafted to reflect the locomotive's unique character, described as "powerful, graceful and steeped in history." Built in 1923, the Flying Scotsman made history by becoming the first steam engine to reach an authenticated speed of 100mph. Now owned by the National Railway Museum, it remains a moving monument to Britain's railway heritage.
How to Secure Your Tickets
Demand is expected to be extremely high for these limited engagements. Tickets are sold on a strictly first-come, first-served basis exclusively through the Vintage Trains website. Prospective travellers are urged to book promptly to avoid disappointment.
This exciting news follows another significant rail event for the city, the inaugural departure of the Caledonian Sleeper from Birmingham International station to the Scottish Highlands. The return of the Flying Scotsman promises a very different, but equally memorable, rail adventure closer to home.
