Motorists across the UK are being urged to fill up their vehicles ahead of a crucial financial announcement that could significantly increase driving costs.
Budget Announcement Could Impact Fuel Prices
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to deliver the Labour government's Autumn Budget on November 26, with industry experts warning that fuel duty changes could be announced. The budget represents the government's second major financial statement since taking office.
The potential changes come against the backdrop of a temporary 5p-per-litre fuel duty cut that was introduced following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This measure was designed to protect drivers from sharp oil price increases but was always intended as a temporary solution.
Key Dates and Potential Price Increases
The current 5p fuel duty reduction is scheduled to expire on March 22, 2026. If the cut is removed and fuel duty is unfrozen simultaneously, drivers could face substantial price increases that would align with current inflation rates.
Matthew Briggs, CEO of Right Fuel Card, is actively encouraging drivers to seek out the best fuel deals and consider filling their tanks if these changes materialise. He emphasised the importance of strategic refuelling, stating: "Of course, these fuel prices vary nationwide depending on the location, but the critical advice is to avoid motorway fill-ups due to their excessively high prices."
Briggs further explained how petrol stations capitalise on motorists' limited options: "Petrol stations capitalise on the fact that when you're on the motorway and running low on fuel, you're compelled to pay regardless of the cost."
Current Prices and Winter Driving Advice
According to the latest RAC Fuel Watch data, the average price at major supermarket forecourts including Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco currently stands at 132p per litre. This represents a saving of 3.33p compared to the national average for unleaded fuel.
With worsening weather conditions, the RAC is also advising drivers to take additional precautions before embarking on major journeys. Their recommendations include:
- Checking windscreen wiper blades and replacing them if necessary
- Considering upgrading to 'aero' wipers on older vehicles for better performance
- Filling up with fuel before travelling to avoid unnecessary consumption in traffic
- Remembering that using lights, heaters and wipers further reduces fuel economy
Drivers are being encouraged to stay informed about the Autumn Budget announcements and plan their refuelling strategy accordingly to mitigate potential cost increases.
