Van drivers across the UK are being cautioned that they could receive on-the-spot fines of up to £300 for a common winter mistake: overloading their vehicles.
The Dangerous Assumption
Drew Hamilton, a van specialist at First Step Vehicle Solutions, has highlighted a widespread and potentially costly misconception. He states that many motorists incorrectly believe that if all their cargo fits inside the van and the doors close, the load is automatically safe and legal. "People often think that if they can close the doors, they're fine. But that's simply not how the law works," Hamilton explained.
He emphasised that every van has a strict legal weight limit, known as the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). Exceeding this limit can result in an immediate £300 fine and may also lead to penalty points on the driver's licence.
Understanding Your Van's Limits
The GVW is the absolute maximum weight the vehicle is permitted to be when fully laden. This figure includes the weight of the van itself, all fuel, the driver, any passengers, and the entire cargo of tools, equipment, and goods.
"The GVW is usually printed inside the door frame or under the bonnet, but a lot of people never check it," Hamilton noted, pointing out that this lack of awareness is what frequently leads drivers into trouble. He also warned that a van can appear to be half-empty yet still be dangerously overweight, as heavy individual items, equipment racks, and accessories all contribute to the total.
Risks and Practical Advice
Overloading a van has serious implications for road safety. "It takes longer to stop, steering becomes less responsive, and there's much more strain on the tyres, brakes and suspension," Hamilton said. The increased risk of a tyre blowout or mechanical failure endangers not only the driver but everyone else on the road.
To avoid penalties and stay safe, Hamilton offers clear guidance. He recommends that drivers who are unsure about their van's weight should use a public weighbridge, which are more common than many realise. Weighing individual items before loading can also help prevent errors.
His final piece of advice is to plan for a margin of safety: "Running just under the limit every day leaves no margin for error. Having extra capacity is much safer in the long run." Taking a few minutes to check the van's plate and manage the load could prevent a hefty fine and a serious accident this winter.
