Three secondary school pupils have sustained what police describe as 'potentially serious' injuries after falling from a window on a double-decker bus in Greater Manchester.

Emergency Response to Bolton Road Incident

The alarming incident occurred on Bolton Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield on Wednesday, 7th January 2026. Emergency services launched a major operation in response, with the air ambulance deployed to the scene. According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the three teenagers fell through a window on the top deck of a school bus.

Injuries and Initial Police Assessment

While the injuries sustained are not believed to be life-threatening, authorities have classified them as 'potentially serious'. All three children were taken to hospital for urgent treatment. Inspector Simon Barrie, from GMP's Wigan District, stated that ensuring the children received the necessary medical care was the immediate priority.

"This is a serious incident that will cause disruption," Inspector Barrie said. "Thankfully we don’t believe their injuries are life-threatening. This does appear to be an unfortunate accident at this time but we will be making enquiries as to the circumstances and liaising with partners."

Investigation into the Circumstances

GMP confirmed that an investigation is now underway to establish the full sequence of events. In an official statement, the force added: "The investigation is in its early stages and work is underway to determine the full circumstances of this incident." The focus will be on understanding how the children came to fall from the bus window, with police working alongside relevant agencies.

The incident has raised immediate concerns about safety on school transport, particularly regarding windows on the upper decks of buses. It is expected that the investigation will scrutinise all factors involved in the distressing event.
