Digital Driving Licence Full UK Rollout Confirmed 2026

A major change to driving licences is set to be fully rolled out across the UK this year, with millions of motorists set to benefit from a digital version of their ID. The Labour Party Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, has described the technology as a 'game changer'.

Digital Driving Licence Launch

The digital driving licence was first introduced in January 2025 as part of the new GOV.UK App. The Labour Party has now confirmed that a 'full rollout later in the year' will take place, making the digital ID available to all drivers who choose to use it.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'This is a game changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID.' She emphasised that the digital licence will make everyday tasks such as age verification for buying alcohol or DIY equipment much easier and more secure.

GOV.UK Wallet Features

Peter Kyle, who served as Science Secretary at the time of the announcement, explained the broader vision: 'GOV.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually.' He added: 'For people who choose to use GOV.UK Wallet, they will find it easier to prove they're entitled to benefits or check their age when buying alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before. Crucially, it also opens huge opportunities to make interacting with public services much easier by putting people in control of their own data.'

Veterans First to Benefit

Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns DSO OBE MC MP, announced that former service personnel will be the first citizens to access the government's new digital wallet. He stated: 'It is fantastic that former service personnel will become the first citizens to access the government's new digital wallet. Having access to their HM Armed Forces Veteran Card via their smartphone will help make it even easier for them to verify their veteran status and access the support and benefits they're entitled to. This is a government committed to delivering for all those who serve and have served. We're turning words into action to improve life for every veteran.'

EU Drivers Also Set to Benefit

Drivers in the European Union will also gain from new features in the near future. The EU has announced that it will make 'licence replacement, renewal, and exchange significantly easier when moving between Member States'. While no firm date has been given for the introduction of the technology, Member States will begin issuing the functions 'after a brief transitional period'.

Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, commented: 'Today marks a major step forward in modernising our driver's licencing system and bringing down the unacceptable number of road deaths across the EU.'

The digital driving licence is expected to reduce the need for physical documents and streamline identity verification processes across the UK and Europe.
