Skipton Building Society is launching a unique initiative to provide free taxi rides for shoppers and commuters in Birmingham city centre. This generous offer is part of the building society's 'Up To The ISA Challenge' campaign, aimed at encouraging open conversations about money and promoting tax-free savings.

When and Where to Catch a Free Taxi

The free taxi service will operate on Tuesday, April 7, from 9am to 5pm. Commuters and shoppers can access the service at the taxi rank on Edgbaston Street or simply flag down one of Skipton Building Society's distinctive full-blue branded cabs as they travel through the city.

Each free journey covers distances of up to five miles, allowing passengers to save their fare money and potentially redirect those funds toward their savings goals. Skipton Building Society will cover all costs associated with these rides.

Financial Advice on the Move

Alex Sitaras, head of savings at Skipton Building Society, explained the motivation behind the campaign: "We wanted to kick-start the new financial year in a way that genuinely helps people and sparks conversations about saving. By covering the cost of their commute, we're hoping to give people a small but meaningful boost, and maybe even inspire them to put what they've saved toward building their own savings."

Passengers will receive an easy-to-follow ISA tip sheet during their ride, providing straightforward guidance on tax-free savings options. The building society aims to make financial advice more accessible and trustworthy.

Research Highlights Financial Advice Challenges

The campaign follows research conducted in the West Midlands that revealed several insights about financial guidance:

  • The most valued financial advice received was to always maintain an emergency fund.
  • 19% of respondents were advised to get on the property ladder as soon as possible.
  • 17% recommended 'living below your means' while 16% emphasized avoiding high-interest debt.
  • 19% admitted receiving problematic advice to 'just put it on a credit card' regardless of affordability.
  • 37% reported receiving unsolicited financial advice, with 47% encountering it in unexpected places including pubs, weddings, and from taxi drivers.
  • 52% find it difficult to determine which financial guidance they can genuinely trust.

Alex Sitaras added: "Our research shows that many people aren't sure where to turn for financial advice, and often pick up guidance in the most unexpected places. We've taken this conversation on the road, quite literally, by inviting people into our branded taxis for open, honest chats about ISAs, saving habits, and why good advice matters."
