28,400 Cars at Risk of Breakdown in England on Monday, Warns Green Flag
28,400 Cars at Risk of Breakdown on Monday

Britain's drivers are facing a major disruption risk this Monday, with breakdown provider Green Flag warning that an estimated 28,400 vehicles across England could grind to a halt. The firm predicts that Monday, January 5, 2026, will be its busiest day of the year for call-outs.

The Perfect Storm for Vehicle Failure

This surge in breakdowns is attributed to a combination of factors. Millions of people are returning to work after the festive break, attempting to start cars that may have been left idle for a week or more. This period of inactivity, coupled with the ongoing cold winter weather, creates a perfect storm for battery failure and other mechanical issues.

Katie Lomas, Managing Director at Green Flag, explained the situation. "That first Monday back after the festive break can be hectic as many people start their vehicles for the first time in a couple of weeks," she said. "Not only is it likely to be a busy time on the roads, but it is also expected that many people will experience issues with their cars."

Expert Advice to Avoid a Breakdown

To mitigate the risk, Green Flag offers a simple preventative measure. Lomas recommends a 20 to 30-minute drive to help recharge the battery, circulate essential fluids, prevent brakes from sticking, and maintain tyre health. This advice is particularly crucial given the severe weather forecast.

George Fiddes from Transport Scotland echoed the need for caution, stating: "Particularly cold weather is expected this week which is likely to impact driving conditions... so our advice to motorists is to plan your journey, leave extra time if needed and drive to the conditions." He urged travellers to check the Traffic Scotland website and X/Twitter page for the latest updates.

Wider Travel Disruption Expected

The Met Office has also issued warnings that extend beyond car troubles. The forecast indicates that travel delays on roads are likely, potentially stranding vehicles and passengers. Furthermore, some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are anticipated.

The impact could be severe in rural areas, with a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off. The warnings also extend to potential power cuts and possible disruptions to other services, including mobile phone coverage.

With Green Flag estimating that a driver somewhere in the UK will need assistance roughly every three seconds throughout Monday, the message from all authorities is clear: prepare your vehicle, plan ahead, and allow extra time for journeys.
