Drivers using the Dartford Crossing have been left significantly out of pocket following an extensive 30-hour shutdown of one of its tunnels. The incident unfolded on 23 January, when a vehicle that was too tall for the tunnel entered, resulting in what National Highways described as significant damage to critical systems essential to the tunnel's safe operation. This forced the immediate closure of the tunnel for safety reasons, lasting over a full day. National Highways has confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact causes and prevent future occurrences.
According to Rob Hollyman, a former haulage boss based in Purfleet and West Thurrock, while it is not an unusual occurrence for drivers of unsuitable vehicles to attempt entry, safety measures typically prevent such incidents. He expressed bewilderment, stating, It's unfathomable as to why somebody could make that mistake, and emphasised the need to understand why the safety protocols failed on this occasion.
Political Response and Demands for Accountability
Local MPs have voiced strong concerns over the incident, calling for accountability and apologies to affected motorists and residents. Jim Dickson, MP for Dartford, has written to National Highways chief executive Nick Harris, demanding a full and urgent investigation and an official apology to those impacted by the prolonged disruption.
Jen Craft, MP for Thurrock, told the BBC that after visiting the crossing control centre, it appeared that robust procedures were in place to prevent such events. However, she noted, clearly on this occasion it just didn't work. Craft has pledged to seek assurances from National Highways on measures to ensure this does not happen again, highlighting the need for improved safety enforcement.

The closure had severe repercussions for northbound motorists, who faced delays of up to two hours as all traffic was diverted to use the other tunnel. This not only caused inconvenience but also led to financial losses for drivers due to wasted time and increased fuel consumption.
