An investigation has uncovered that dozens of drivers in the West Midlands have received speeding fines this year despite travelling below 30 miles per hour.
The Hidden Danger for Motorists
Data obtained from West Midlands Police shows that 59 speeding offences were recorded for vehicles travelling between 20mph and 29mph since the start of 2025. Many motorists may have been surprised to receive a penalty notice, unaware they had broken the law.
The issue arises from a common misconception. While drivers often assume a 30mph limit applies in residential areas, 20mph zones are increasingly common, particularly around schools where local councils are prioritising safety.
How Drivers Are Being Caught
These offences were likely detected by mobile speeding units. These are police vans deployed at the roadside in known hotspot areas to monitor vehicle speeds.
The revelation comes as Birmingham prepares for a significant road safety overhaul. In the new year, the speed limit will be reduced to 20mph on over 25 main roads across Birmingham. This initiative will be supported by the rollout of new speed cameras.
A Changing Landscape for Road Safety
While some drivers punished for travelling under 30mph may feel unfairly treated, police emphasise that 20mph limits are implemented for safety reasons. The need for extra caution is paramount in areas with high pedestrian activity, such as school zones.
This situation serves as a crucial reminder for all motorists to always observe road signage and never assume the speed limit is 30mph. As traffic regulations evolve, driver awareness is the best defence against unexpected fines.
