New official statistics have revealed a startling level of non-compliance with 20mph speed restrictions across Britain's road network.
Widespread Speeding Revealed
According to Department for Transport data, an alarming 84 per cent of vehicles have been recorded regularly travelling faster than 20mph limits. The figures indicate that the majority of British drivers are consistently ignoring these lower speed zones.
More concerning still, over half of all motorists were found to be exceeding the speed limit by more than 10mph, creating significantly dangerous conditions in areas designed to protect vulnerable road users.
Safety Concerns and Official Response
Imran Malek, corporate sales manager at DrivingExperience.com, expressed serious concerns about the findings. "It's shocking to see the level of speeding on 20mph roads," he stated.
"While they have caused division in some areas and among some drivers, we would urge all motorists to drive sensibly and observe speed limits, keeping thrills to the track with a driving experience," Malek added, emphasising the importance of road safety for all users.
National Approaches to 20mph Limits
The Welsh Government has clarified its position on speed limit adjustments, stating that most changes from 20mph to 30mph will occur on A and B roads, which typically serve as main or strategic routes.
Meanwhile, Transport Scotland has highlighted the critical safety rationale behind 20mph zones, warning that the average person is seven times more likely to die if struck by a vehicle travelling at 30mph compared to 20mph.
Mr Malek concluded with a reminder to motorists: "Whatever the driving situation, it's common courtesy to stay alert behind the wheel, ensuring all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, stay safe."
