Oxfordshire Council Distributes Free Bin Stickers to Support 20mph Speed Limits
Households across Oxfordshire are being encouraged to apply for complimentary wheelie bin stickers designed to remind motorists to observe the 20mph speed limit in residential zones. This initiative marks a significant milestone as the county implements its 275th 20mph scheme, part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related incidents.
Promoting Safer Streets Through Community Engagement
Since launching its 20mph program in 2022, Oxfordshire County Council has collaborated with parish and town councils to introduce lower speed limits in areas where local authorities have requested them. To celebrate this achievement and bolster support for these schemes, the council has partnered with the national campaign group 20’s Plenty for Us. Together, they are offering free stickers to residents who wish to advocate for slower speeds in their neighborhoods.
Each household can request up to 10 stickers by visiting the 20’s Plenty webpage. These stickers serve as a visual reminder to drivers that 20mph is the appropriate speed in residential areas, aiming to foster a culture of safety and consideration on the roads.
Council Leadership Emphasizes Safety Benefits
Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Management, highlighted the importance of this initiative. He stated, "This is an incredible landmark, and I want to thank all the parish and town councils who have been in touch with us, asking to make their residential streets safer and more pleasant places."
He further explained, "Residents can now visibly demonstrate their support by putting these stickers on their wheelie bins, to remind drivers that 20mph should be the norm in areas where people live. Throughout the delivery of this programme, we have been clear about the advantages it brings. You are seven times more likely to survive if you are hit by a car driving at 20mph than if you are hit at 30mph."
Aligning with Vision Zero Goals
Reducing speeds in residential areas is a crucial component of the council's commitment to Vision Zero, an ambitious plan to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from road traffic collisions in Oxfordshire by 2050. This sticker campaign not only raises awareness but also actively involves the community in achieving these safety objectives.
Looking ahead, another ten 20mph schemes are scheduled for implementation, which will bring the total to 285 across the county. This ongoing expansion underscores the council's dedication to creating safer, more livable environments for all residents.
