Road Haulage Association Demands Fuel Duty Rebates for Essential Drivers
The Road Haulage Association has issued a strong call for the introduction of new rebates aimed at supporting thousands of drivers facing escalating road costs. In a direct appeal to Rachel Reeves, the association emphasized the urgent need for financial relief as anger mounts over the burden on essential transport sectors.
Essential User Rebate Proposal
The RHA is advocating for an Essential User Rebate specifically designed for HGV, coach, and van operators. This initiative would enable these businesses to reclaim a portion of the duty paid on petrol and diesel, providing targeted support to keep supply chains operational. According to the association, fuel costs have surged dramatically, with many companies reporting increases exceeding one-third in a short timeframe, creating an unsustainable financial strain.
The Road Haulage Association stated: "These sectors are essential users of fuel. They keep supply chains moving, support communities, and underpin the wider economy. Approximately 80% of goods are transported by road, and commercial vehicles contribute over a third of all fuel duty receipts—yet they remain highly vulnerable to rising fuel prices."
Impact on Families and Businesses
Families and haulage firms have already experienced significant hikes in their petrol and diesel bills, equivalent to hundreds of pounds annually. The RHA highlighted that the pressure on operators is immediate, necessitating prompt action to prevent further economic disruption. The motoring group pointed to ongoing geopolitical tensions, such as the conflict involving Iran, as a key factor keeping fuel prices elevated.
In a letter to the Labour Party, the RHA warned: "Higher fuel prices drive up costs for everyday consumers and push businesses to the brink. We cannot afford another inflation crisis triggered by escalating fuel expenses."
Analysis of Fuel Price Increases
Recent analysis by the RAC Foundation reveals that drivers have faced an additional £1 billion in costs at the pumps due to skyrocketing prices linked to international conflicts. Diesel users, who include hauliers and tradesmen, have been particularly affected, with prices rising at nearly double the rate of petrol. This disparity exacerbates the financial challenges for essential transport operators, underscoring the critical need for rebates to mitigate economic strain and maintain national logistics.
