The crash occurred on the northbound carriageway between junction 5 and 6 on the dynamic hard shoulder section of a smart motorway at 10:18 AM on Thursday, May 28. The incident prompted around an hour of delays and four miles of tailbacks.

National Highways West Midlands posted: "Lane 1 (of 4) is closed on the #M6 in the #WestMidlands northbound between J5 #SuttonColdfield & J6 #Birmingham due to a multi-vehicle collision. @WMPolice @Traffic officers are working on scene. Current delays of 55 minutes and 4 miles of congestion on approach."

All vehicles were moved to the emergency bay, and all lanes have since reopened. Traffic data monitor Inrix later reported stop-start traffic on the M5 northbound at M6 J8 with a travel time of 50 minutes.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that medics did not attend the scene, and no injuries were reported.
