A man was rushed to hospital with potentially serious injuries following a two-car collision involving a police vehicle in Solihull. The incident took place on Shutt Lane in Earlswood, near Hickory's Smokehouse, shortly before 5am on May 20.
The police car sustained extensive damage, with its front bumper and bonnet destroyed at the scene. Emergency services responded promptly, and a man from one of the vehicles received treatment for potentially serious injuries before being transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further care.
Road Closure and Investigation
Shutt Lane was closed following the crash, and vehicle recovery teams were called to remove the damaged cars. West Midlands Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the involvement of a police vehicle. A spokesperson for the force said: "A police car was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Shutt Lane at just before 5am today (20 May). A man from a vehicle has been taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries. The full circumstances are being established but a referral is being made to the IOPC, as is standard procedure."
Ambulance Service Response
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to reports of a two-car RTC on Earlswood Common at 5.04am. One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. We treated one patient, a man, for potentially serious injuries before conveying him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham."
The IOPC has been contacted for comment regarding the referral. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected as authorities work to establish the full circumstances of the crash.
