Met Office extends yellow snow and ice warnings into Tuesday
UK snow and ice warnings extended to Tuesday

The Met Office has prolonged its yellow weather alerts for snow and ice, with the warnings now valid into Tuesday, 6th January 2026. This extension signals a continuation of the wintry conditions that blanketed parts of the country over the weekend, posing a renewed threat of travel chaos.

Widespread Warnings and Forecast Details

The weather service has issued separate warnings for several regions. One alert covers almost the entire Welsh coastline, stretching inland, and also includes Cornwall. A second warning is in place for the east coast of England, with a third over northern Scotland. Notably, the West Midlands is currently excluded from Tuesday's warning, though further flurries are possible there later in the week on Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecasters at the Met Office provided specific details for Wales, stating that scattered sleet and snow showers will continue to move southwards through Monday afternoon and evening. While not every location will be affected, some areas could see accumulations.

The greatest risk of significant snowfall is across parts of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, and Ceredigion, where 5-10 cm could build up, particularly near the Preseli Mountains. Some showers may also contain hail, leading to locally slippery surfaces.

Overnight Hazard Shift to Ice

As the showers ease through Monday night, the primary danger is expected to change. With temperatures predicted to fall below freezing, ice will become a more widespread hazard overnight and into Tuesday morning. This black ice poses a serious risk to pedestrians and drivers on untreated surfaces.

Potential for Further Travel Disruption

The extended warnings have raised concerns about further travel disruption at the start of the working week. The combination of fresh snowfalls and widespread ice is likely to impact road and rail networks in the worst-affected areas, complicating commutes and school runs.

Residents in the regions under warning are advised to stay updated with the latest Met Office forecasts and travel information from local authorities and transport providers. Allowing extra time for journeys and taking precautions on footpaths and roads will be essential on Tuesday morning.
