Former FT Editor Lionel Barber Urges UK to Embrace AI for Economic Revival
Ex-FT Editor: UK Must Embrace AI to Boost Economy

Former FT Editor Lionel Barber Issues Warning on UK Economy

Lionel Barber, the former editor of the Financial Times, has cautioned that Britain must not "succumb to a narrative of decline" and needs to urgently embrace artificial intelligence to regain lost economic ground over the past decade. Speaking to the Press Association, Barber emphasized that the country requires a significant shift towards being "a lot more business-friendly" following a series of setbacks for the corporate sector.

Brexit and Economic Missteps Highlighted

Barber, who led the FT for 15 years until 2020, pointed to specific challenges that have hindered the UK's progress. He cited Brexit as a "massive distraction" and acknowledged that Britain has "lost ground in the last 10 years." His comments come at a critical time as he joins a new specialist advisory board for US firm Capitol AI, which is launching operations in the UK and Europe.

Capitol AI Expansion and Advisory Appointments

The Washington-based Capitol AI, founded in 2021 by Shaun Modi and Tom Hallaran, aims to provide a "model-agnostic" agentic AI platform to help businesses analyze data and generate documents, reports, and summaries. To bolster its leadership in the UK, the firm has appointed Barber and Lord Ed Vaizey, former culture and digital minister, to its advisory board. This move is part of Capitol AI's strategy to ramp up expansion in the region.

Barber's Role in Supporting AI Innovation

Barber expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating he is keen to support a tech start-up and "an exciting entrepreneur" while aiding Britain in becoming a hub for cutting-edge AI businesses. He highlighted that the UK is actively trying to "carve a role out for itself" as an AI-friendly nation, which is attracting firms like Capitol AI. The company has recently opened a new UK office and hired Mike Nayler, a former executive at Lockheed Martin and Dell, to lead operations targeting clients in both the public and private sectors.

AI as a Central Economic Driver

In his remarks, Barber underscored the importance of AI in driving future economic growth. He asserted, "AI is at the heart of its business... so I'm backing a high-tech entrepreneur, but also this is cutting-edge technology. AI is coming, whether you like it or not." He believes that positioning the UK as a global AI hub is crucial for enhancing its standing as a premier business centre and reversing the trend of economic decline.
